FAQs

Do you ship pre-ground coffee?

We only ship whole bean coffee. Why? Because we want you to have the best possible coffee experience and you freshly grinding your coffee before brewing it is an essential component. You don’t want to spend money on great coffee to only have it start oxidizing and aging as soon as it goes through the grinder. Investing in a good coffee grinder will be extremely valuable for your daily coffee experience.

Where is my coffee roasted?

Coffee is roasted, packed and shipped from our roastery in San Diego, CA.

Do you recommend any particular grinder?

We recommend the Baratza Encore due to its quality and accessible price point. It’s a great all around grinder for everything besides espresso.

What do you recommend for espresso?

The Baratza Sette 30 conical burr will be more than sufficient for your home espresso. Again, we’re thinking quality and overall value.

How long is the shelf life of coffee?

We recommend that you consume your bagged coffee within 4 weeks after roast date. Coffee will not spoil or go bad after this time, but it will start to lose it’s distinct and complex flavors that characterize the coffee.

How do I properly store coffee?

Only grind the amount of coffee you need right before brewing it. We recommend storing coffee in a cool, dry place, away from heat and light, in its original packaging, or an airtight container.

We suggest that you avoid storing coffee in a fridge or freezer. Moving beans in and out of the freezer every time you make coffee can introduce moisture to the beans, resulting in potential mold growth and degradation of the coffee.

How do you source your coffee beans?

We source with coffee producers we’ve met during our origin trips and buy coffee from reputable companies that work directly with farmers to make their farms more efficient and profitable, and of course, produce the highest quality coffee possible.

How do coffee subscriptions work?

Visit our dedicated Coffee Subscriptions FAQs page for more information.

Are your coffees fair trade certified? Are they organic?

Instead of focusing on labels that many use as their marketing tactics, we focus and learn about what is being done at the farm level, specifically the producer’s efforts towards quality, environmental sustainability, and organic practices. Consumers don’t realize how expensive the certification process is and how unrealistic that is for the many coffee farmers and producers around the world who are just trying to put their kids through school or put food on the table. That is why we pay fair prices, above typical market prices, so that all in the coffee supply chain, especially the farmer/producer, can benefit.
